Enthronement of the Bishop

The Rt Revd James William Scobie Newcombe, who lives
in Kendal and is known to most in the community as Bishop
James, became the 67th Bishop of Carlisle on Saturday, 10th
October. Cumbria’s clergy, an ecumenical gathering, civic
representatives and lay people comprised the very large
congregations of the three part service.
As well as people from the Beacon Team churches,
Headteacher Mrs. Field was present with some of the
children from Selside School who had designed the artwork,
depicting the Cumbrian hills and flowers, for the front and
back covers of the service booklet.
The service began in St Cuthbert’s Church and
followed in the Cathedral, where the Bishop preached his
inaugural sermon. Closed circuit television allowed the two
congregations to see and hear what was going on in both
churches. Between these two parts, the Bishop and his
procession moved into the city centre, stopped at the historic
Carel Cross and pronounced God’s blessing on the city and
county. It was an enjoyable and memorable occasion.
